The Alamo
While remembered as a battle between Texians and Mexicans, its defenders actually included a diverse group of Tejanos, African-Americans, and Europeans.
In fact, women and children were present during the siege, with some survivors like Susanna Dickinson and her infant daughter living to tell the tale.

Famous writer Washington Irving (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle) first wrote of the Cross Timbers Forest, saying, "I shall not easily forget the mortal toil, and the vexations of flesh and spirit, that we underwent occasionally in our wanderings through the Cross Timber. It was like struggling through forests of cast iron." And that's how the Cross Timbers Forest got its nickname, "The Cast Iron Forest."
