The Alamo
While remembered as a battle between Texians and Mexicans, its defenders actually included a diverse group of Tejanos, African-Americans, and Europeans.
In fact, women and children were present during the siege, with some survivors like Susanna Dickinson and her infant daughter living to tell the tale.
The rallying cry, "Remember The Alamo!" was shouted at the Battle of San Jacinto as a far smaller army under the command of General Sam Houston routed General Santa Anna.
"Remember The Alamo" encapsulates a profound struggle — the fight against tyranny and the unwavering desire to live as free people. It symbolizes courage, sacrifice, and the enduring flame of liberty that continues to inspire us today.
The Cast Iron Forest
The dense, impenetrable forests of North and North Central Texas (stretching all the way down to the Waco region) earned the name "The Cast Iron Forest" from those who dared to venture into its depths. Famous writer Washington Irving (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle) first wrote of the Cross Timbers Forest, saying, "I shall not easily forget the mortal toil, and the vexations of flesh and spirit, that we underwent occasionally in our wanderings through the Cross Timber. It was like struggling through forests of cast iron." And that's how the Cross Timbers Forest got its nickname, "The Cast Iron Forest." This candle is for those who defy the impossible, and venture into The Cast Iron Forest.
The Texas Cattle Drive
The Texas cattle drives of the late 19th century, epitomized by the famous Chisholm Trail, marked a pivotal era in American history.
This vital artery, named for a half-Cherokee trader, pumped life into the post-war economy, driving Texas longhorns northward to hungry eastern markets.
More than a mere cattle route, it became the lifeblood of the Wild West mythos, nurturing a cultural legacy that would long outlast the brief era of its relevance.
Fun Fact: Cowboy Mark Withers once wrote that he could hear the sound of 60,000 - 75,000 cattle as he approached a crossing at the Red River even though he was still 2-days ride away.
